Meet Willy Chambulo: The Visionary Behind the Safari Experience

When people dream of an African safari, they often picture the animals first—and rightly so. But behind every unforgettable moment in the wild are the people who make it possible. One of those people is Willy Chambulo, the founder of Kibo Guides & co-founder of Tanganyika Wilderness Camps and, decades later, a long-standing leader in Tanzanian tourism.

Willy’s story is one of vision, grit, and deep love for his country. He was born and raised in northern Tanzania, growing up in a rural village in very modest circumstances, with only a basic formal education.

As a young man, he moved to Arusha and began working as a motor mechanic, repairing safari vehicles. From there, he transitioned into guiding—learning languages along the way and building relationships with travelers.

In 1991, he founded Kibo Guides, starting with just a single vehicle. Over time, the company grew into one of Tanzania’s most respected safari operators.

When he experienced difficulties finding appropriate accommodations in the bush for his clients, he co-founded Tanganyika Wilderness Camps, developing a collection of first mobile tented camps, adding permanent lodges as he grew the business in some of Tanzania’s most iconic wildlife areas. I still fondly recall meeting him years ago, standing on-site in shorts and sandals, hammer in hand, working to build what would become one of his first lodges. He paused to show us around what would later become one of our regular stops, Ngorongoro Farm House, sharing his plans and his dream.

And what a dream it has become.

What stands out most is that Willy’s connection to Tanzania isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal.

He often speaks about being “born in the wild” and growing up surrounded by the very landscapes that now draw travelers from around the world.

That perspective carries through in everything he has built—safaris that are not just about seeing wildlife, but about experiencing Tanzania in a way that respects both the land and the people who call it home.

Today, Tanganyika Wilderness Camps is one of the most respected names in Tanzanian safari hospitality. Their collection of lodges and tented camps spans some of the country’s most iconic parks—Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro. Each property is known for warm hospitality, authentic safari style, and locations that put you right in the heart of the action.

But Willy didn’t stop there.

Over the years, he’s not only built a company—he’s helped shape the country’s tourism landscape. As a respected member and current president of the Tanzania Tourist Board, Willy has been a tireless advocate for responsible travel, conservation, and local employment. His work has elevated Tanzania as one of the premier safari destinations in the world—all while creating opportunities for countless people across the country.

Beyond business, he is deeply committed to:

  • Employing and training local Tanzanians (hundreds of staff across his companies)

  • Supporting education and community development

  • Funding schools, clinics, and water projects through his foundation

For those of us who have traveled with Tanganyika Wilderness Camps over the years, the impact of Willy’s vision is felt in every welcome smile, every beautifully prepared meal, every campfire story shared under the stars.

I feel honored to have witnessed his journey—from those early days of building camp by hand to seeing his vision flourish across the country. Every time we return to one of his camps with our guests, I’m reminded that a safari isn’t just about where you go—it’s about who has helped create the experience along the way.

Thank you, Willy, for building something remarkable with heart, humility, and a true sense of place.
