Tanzania: Wilderness, Wonder & Connection

There is something about Tanzania that captures the heart long before the safari is even over.
Perhaps it is the endless plains of the Serengeti National Park, where wildebeest stretch to the horizon beneath dramatic African skies. Perhaps it is the ancient beauty of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where wildlife moves through a collapsed volcanic caldera unlike anywhere else on earth. Or perhaps it is something even deeper — the warmth, kindness, resilience, and quiet joy of the Tanzanian people themselves.

For us at Booth Adventure Travel, Tanzania is not simply a destination we sell. It is a place that has become part of our lives and our hearts.

Over more than two decades of traveling throughout East Africa, Tanzania has continually called us back. We return not only for the extraordinary wildlife encounters — the lion prides, elephant herds, graceful giraffes, elusive leopards, and unforgettable Great Migration crossings — but also for the relationships we have built with the people who make these journeys so meaningful.

One of the greatest blessings of our work has been our close relationship with Serengeti Big Sky Safaris, a Tanzanian-owned safari company that shares our values of integrity, conservation, personalized guiding, and heartfelt hospitality. Together, we carefully craft safaris that go far beyond checking animals off a list. These journeys are designed to immerse you in the rhythm of Africa — to slow down, connect deeply, and experience the wonder of the wild in a meaningful and respectful way.

Our guests often arrive dreaming about wildlife, but they leave talking just as much about the people and shared experiences.
The guides whose laughter fills long game drives. The lodge staff who remember your favorite drink after a single evening. The smiling faces of children waving from villages along the roadside. The pride, warmth, and generosity that seem woven into everyday life in Tanzania.

While many travelers know Tanzania for its iconic northern safari circuit, some of the places that have captured our hearts most deeply are the quieter corners — the hidden gems that feel wonderfully untouched and wild. In northern Tanzania, we are continually drawn back to the elephant-rich wilderness of Tarangire National Park, the open plains of the Ndutu area is my favorite in December through February. Northern Serengeti near the Mara River is a June-October favorite.

Further south, Tanzania reveals yet another side of itself — raw, untamed, and breathtakingly remote. Places like Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park have given us some of the most extraordinary safari moments of our lives. Vast landscapes, ancient baobabs, enormous elephant herds, and predator encounters unfold here with very few other vehicles in sight. Southern Tanzania offers a feeling of true wilderness that is increasingly rare in the modern world, and it remains one of Africa’s best-kept safari secrets.

And then there are places we are looking forward to exploring further, like Rubondo Island National Park — a hidden paradise on the shores of Lake Victoria where forests, birds, chimpanzees, and water meet in a safari experience unlike anywhere else in East Africa. And I long to experience the dramatic beauty of Lake Natron, where flamingos gather beneath the towering presence of Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Maasai. Tanzania has an incredible ability to surprise even the most seasoned travelers, revealing layer after layer of beauty far beyond the famous names most people know.

We believe safari is about far more than sightings. It is about connection.
Connection to nature.
Connection to people.
Connection to a world that still feels wonderfully wild.

Whether you are witnessing the drama of the Great Migration in the northern Serengeti, watching the miracle of calving season unfold in the Ndutu region, searching for rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater or in a protected area of the Serengeti, quietly observing elephants beneath ancient baobab trees in Tarangire, or sitting beside a campfire under a sky overflowing with stars in the remote south, Tanzania has a way of changing people.

It humbles you. Grounds you. Inspires you.

And long after you return home, part of your heart remains there.
